Craft Shows [11 Feb 2009|01:17am]

[ mood | blah ]

At the moment I am looking into moving to Ashville, I was wondering how often there are non government (where I live there is one craft show, that is government run and costly) art/craft shows/events going on (IE: weekly, monthly, daily etc). Thanks

Looking for an artist!! [13 Aug 2008|10:48am]

Seeking Asheville Artist to Put Artwork on Display!
Faces of Asheville is an amazing community project that has been put into the world thru the visionary Jenny Bowen & her fearless helper Spyce. We're at beginning of year 2 (final year) for this amazing project & as always, are looking to involve as many Ashe-villians as possible.

Our next part of the project will involve a Get Your Freak On Foto Booth that will make it's debut at this year's Lexington Ave Arts & Fun Festival on Sunday Sept 7th.
There will be tons of freaky fun costumes donated by the wonderful Costume Shoppe for folks to come by and get freaked out in. Jen will snap your shot, and within minutes you'll have the best memento ever of your and your friends getting fun and freaky!

All monies raised will go to the Faces of Asheville Documentary Community Forums that will take place throughout the year. There will be 6 forums - each addressing a specific challenge for Asheville's community as it continues to grow.
The forum issues will be:
-Diversity in Asheville
-Artist Resources in Asheville
-Ecological and Green Living in Asheville
-Local economy, focusing on local business and currency in Asheville
-Alternative Health and Human Services in Asheville
-Interfaith and Spirituality in Asheville

Here is what we need from an artist!!
We're looking for talent to design and then help paint a backdrop for the photos that will be taken at Lex Fest.

We will provide all the supplies, you provide your talent & creativity!
Your art work will be all over town as the backdrop for the many photos that will be the talk of the festival!
This is a wonderful chance for a local artist to be involved in this history making project & get their name and talent out there to be seen by all of Asheville!
Artists will be compensated with proper credit and a free place to exhibit other work at the festival.
Email: Spyce618@gmail.com

If the project has peeked your interest and you'd like to assist in volunteering at the photo booth, or helping coordinate the Community Forums - please email Jenny Bowen at docjen@gmail.com

Free Art Auction and Halloween Party [28 Oct 2006|02:41pm]

Art Auction to support a good local group!

Many local artists have donated AMAZING pieces.

I myself have donated 3 limited edition prints of my own work (on display downtown at Hookah Joe's) - two of them 1/100 prints and the other a 2/100 print.

Come on down to Tingle Alley (behind the parking lot at the corner of Walnut and Broadway) and get yourself a great find!

Then stay and party into the dark with a great Halloween theme and DJ Spookey - plus all the Roller Derby girls are HHHOOOOTTTTT.  I promise  ;-)

See you there!

It'll be a trip.
And just the beginning of a long line of take notices.
Stop on by - have a drink and a happy hookah -
Share some thoughts and have some thoughts given.
I love to pinch, poke at, and provoke ideas.
Hope you'll come out -
Peace - JGB

Good Video Store in Asheville? [29 May 2006|11:25pm]

It's been several years since I last hung my hat up in Sodom-on-French Broad, so I've forgotten much of what's up there.  Is there a good video store with a focus on foreign, art and independent cinema?  I refuse to patronize Blockbuster.

A Call to Local AVL Artists! [04 Apr 2006|01:23am]

A group of local AVL artists (not the fancy shmancy gallery rich moving to AVL self-funded artists - I am talking poor ass broke living in over-crowded houses and working 2-3 crap jobs to get by local youth artists) wants to have a collaborative show where the walls are just covered from top to bottom in local art.
But we need a space -
Ideally in W. AVL or Downtown - with Riverside district being a third possibility.
Mayhap a deal with said location where a percentage of anything sold goes to the establishment, mayhap as a fundraiser?
Does anyone have any suggestions (or are there any other local artist who are interested in joining the bandwagon?)

Please! contact me if you have any ideas -
We need it free (or very very cheap if a deal can not be worked out)
Time frame of this summer sometime if possible.

Peace -

(Also, side note of intrest:

On Wednesday of this week, at two minutes and three seconds after 1:00 in the morning, the time and date will be 01:02:03 04/05/06.

That won't ever happen again.)

New Gallery Exhibitions [26 Jan 2006|12:51am]

Two UNCA photography exhibits will be having their opening receptions this Friday from 7-9pm. Both shows are in Owen Hall (on the UNCA campus).

Dan Wickham's BFA show "A________" is in the downstairs gallery,
Julie Witt's BA show "Gender Interpretations" is in the upstairs gallery.

These exhibitions are the culmination of their degree requirements and have been 2+ years in the making.
If you can't make it to the opening receptions both shows will be up until 2.7.06.

Has anyone else heard the rumor that Sky People is closing down?

I know Dirt already left... and Kitty has not been great about advertising for shows (I *never* know about a show going on there until it's already over, or until I randomly walk in the door.) Apparently they're not doing so well right now.

If Sky People closes... where the hell else are people like me going to display work?

Figured I'd Ask [06 Oct 2005|05:36pm]

I am a digital artist looking for a possible display of work somewhere in town. Anyone know of any traditional galleries or non-traditional spaces I could talk to?

Thanks in advance -

Dead already? [20 Sep 2005|11:32am]

Just because this community has been silent for way too long, I'm going to post the art I'm working on right now and I encourage you all to do the same! I'd love to see what local people are working on whether it's paintings, drawings, poetry, crafts, ANYTHING! Post it so we can all enjoy it. I've been so busy lately I haven't been able to get out to any galleries and I'm really curious about what local artists are doing... I know we don't have many members but if some of you posted some things it would at least satiate my curiosity a little bit :)

This is the art doll I'm currently working on. It's made out of super sculpey, stuffed fabric, acrylic & oil paints. As you can see it's still in need of some touch up paint and a wig, along with some other details. This is the third one I've made.

On the top is my first attempt at an ornament; I'm going to be giving a set to each of my friends for the holidays. It's not finished - it needs a second layer of paint and some hair. The painting is not quite done yet but getting close; I haven't gotten around to the arms, detail in the background, & finishing the dress. I think the hair and face are finished.

[12 Jul 2005|10:08am]

I just posted this in my journal, but I thought it would be relevant here as well. Maybe some of you will find it as interesting as I did:

"Well, somehow she found me rather than me finding her, but I am delighted to have crossed paths with Madame Talbot... Not only is she a very talented artist and fascinating person, but the 'Old Belltown' section of her website really struck me. It is a very detailed, well documented account of a wonderful art town that has fallen victim to gentrification (much like the worst fears of many local Ashevillians). She has all these images of old flyers, storefronts that have since been torn down, advertisements, clippings from newspapers... it gives you quite a vivid picture of what Belltown must have been like before everything that made it what it was, was demolished. I feel like I should run home, re-organize my whole apartment and dedicate an entire section of space (which I don't have to spare) to storing any kind of physical evidence there is in Asheville of the people, events, venues, and shops that make it so interesting and unique. This city is growing so fast, and there is an increasing push toward making it 'upscale'. Who knows whether the city's counterculture, all the weirdness that MAKES it Asheville, will be gone before long. It reawakened my promise to myself (which, of course, I haven't kept) that I would bring my camera with me everywhere, and always have film on hand. Once I get a nice digital camera (which won't be until December, since I'm getting one from my parents for Christmas) it will be a lot easier, but I'm just acutely aware of all the fascinating people we currently have roaming the streets in this city. I'm going to make an attempt to attend more of the drag shows, fringe film showings, and random events that are taking place here. All of this should probably be put up on my Asheville Underground Art website, as soon as I get around to it (no, I don't have a clue when that will be.)"

::Edit:: Shows how much I know about the west coast (NOTHING) - Old Belltown is apparently a neighborhood in Seattle. Anyone been there?

The website is www.madametalbot.com; click the image on the bottom row that says "Belltown Gothic". Click on the image that says "Intro", read that, then click on the image that says "Belltown".

show help [04 Jul 2005|01:02pm]

hi, i realize this is ridiculously late notice, but i would greatly appreciate help booking a show for tomorrow, july 5th, in or around asheville. any venue at all (coffeeshop, porch, tree, house) would be wonderful. and with any other artists.

my name is dustin, i'm from atlanta, and i have a solo project called dustin and the furniture. it's mostly folk/indie/whatever stuff. i'm on oh! map records (http://www.ohmaprecords.com), and some of my older music can be heard at http://www.myspace.com/dustinandthefurniture
i've been on tour for the past two weeks, and i'm looking for a final show somewhere between baltimore and atlanta so i don't have to drive 11 hours in one day. if you have any ideas or would like to help, please contact me at andthefurniture@gmail.com or (404) 520-0272.
